The civilian population of Ladakh region hailing from the border State of J&K needs to be integrated with the national mainstream. In pursuit of this vision, Army has started various projects under ‘OPERATION SADBHAVANA’ such as Army Goodwill Schools, Medical Aid Centres, Community Centre’s and Employment Generation Projects. These gestures by the Army have resulted in good image of the Army and Government of India amongst the local populace.
Army Goodwill School, Karu was started as a Regimental/Formation School under the aegis of Tangtse Brigade in 1998. Trishul Division took over the responsibilities of School on shifting from Leh to Karu in 2000. Mrs. Saroj Ray, then Chairperson, AWWA, Fire & Fury Corps, inaugurated the School on 02 March 2001 as Sadbhavana Institute. Accordingly, the School became an Operation Sadbhavana institute, since then its funding is being totally sponsored from Operation Sadbhavana.
AGS Karu was initially granted recognition by the Chief Education Officer, J&K Education Board, Leh as a private School up to class VIII vide their letter No E-29/4647-648 dt 30 Nov 2006. Since then AGS Karu is being run as Co-education School from Nursery to Class VIII. The academic curriculum as prescribed by the J&K Education Board is being followed and it prepares students to finally appear in class VIII exam conducted by J&K Education Board.
In order to improve the literacy of the local population of Ladakh region, AGS provide education at subsidized fees to the local children with special emphasis on all round development of child. The school provides quality primary and secondary education to children of the local population of Karu and the areas around. Teachers and other non teaching staff are working in this school on a monthly honorarium basis, paid from Sadbhavana Funds.
A case for upgradation of school till Class Xth has been taken up with Jammu Division of J & K Board.
